Adventure Island 3

"Adventure Island 3", released by Hudson Soft in 1992, is the third installment in the popular Adventure Island series for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Known for its engaging side-scrolling platform gameplay, this title continued the series' tradition of vibrant levels and challenging gameplay. A Game Boy version titled "Adventure Island 2: Aliens in Paradise" was released in 1993, adapting the game for portable play.

Story and Gameplay

The game's narrative revolves around Master Higgins, whose girlfriend, Tina (mistakenly called 'Jeannie Jungle' in English materials), is abducted by aliens. Players control Higgins across eight diverse islands, each presenting unique challenges and enemies.

Game Mechanics and Features

  • New Abilities: Higgins gains the ability to crouch, a feature not present in the earlier NES titles, adding a new dimension to the gameplay. However, he loses the ability to backtrack during stages.
  • Consistent Boss Battles: Bosses no longer change location after the player loses a life, differing from the mechanics in Adventure Island 2.
  • Expanded Inventory System: The inventory system is carried over from Adventure Island 2, but now includes eight items instead of five. This includes a boomerang weapon and a crystal for temporary invincibility.
  • New Dinosaur Companion: A new dinosaur friend, a triceratops, is introduced, summoned by a star card and capable of defeating enemies with a rolling attack.
  • Variety of Hidden Rooms: Players can discover different types of hidden rooms, including treasure rooms for power-ups, surfing bonus rounds, and rooms offering the choice to skip levels or bosses.
  • Game Boy Version Features: The Game Boy adaptation includes a password system for saving progress and an interactive map allowing players to revisit completed stages to explore new paths.

Legacy of Adventure Island 3

Adventure Island 3 is fondly remembered for its challenging yet enjoyable gameplay, colorful graphics, and catchy music. It exemplified the classic platformer genre of the early 90s and continued the beloved Adventure Island legacy. Both the NES and Game Boy versions offered hours of entertainment, capturing the charm of the series and providing an enjoyable experience for both old fans and new players alike.
